NBA Standings Explained

NBA standings show how teams are ranked throughout the regular season based on wins and losses. In the NBA, teams are ranked within the Eastern and Western Conferences, with standings determining playoff seeding and postseason qualification.
The most important factor in the standings is a team’s overall winning percentage. When two or more teams finish with the same record, the NBA uses official tiebreaker rules to determine the order. Standings also determine which teams qualify directly for the playoffs and which teams enter the Play-In Tournament.
The tables below explain how NBA standings work, how teams are seeded, and how tiebreakers are applied during the regular season.
